No More Poo.

Shampoo as we know it is only about 100 years old. All throughout history we have used all different forms of “shampoo”. People used to put olive oil, eggs, perfume, herbs, vinegar, the pulp of soapberries, lemon juice, and apple cider vinegar in their hair for shampoo. Only up until recently we have been putting synthetically made chemicals in our hair every day.

My Story

  • 2020

This has been something I have wanted to do since 2020. I would start to not use it then I would chicken out when my hair became “too oily”. I was worried that people would judge me or think I am “dirty” for doing this. In 2020 is when I started to really look into the chemicals I was using in my beauty products. That was my first main reason for pursuing this journey. In 2020 I was still using shampoo in my hair almost every day/ every other day.

  • December 2022

Now let’s go further down the timeline. My hair was thinning, I felt like I was loosing the color of my hair, my hair felt dirty, and I was worried that I was balding in some parts of my head. I was using shampoo targeted for oily hair and using shampoo that only had “natural” ingredients, nothing was helping. I was starting to feel helpless. I couldn’t stop thinking about what would happened if I stopped using shampoo. I was at the time using shampoo 2-3 times a week. I was getting ready to take the leap to no poo.

  • February 27 2023

That was the day I decided no more, yet again. I went a whole week and a half then, I gave in. I gave in due to what I thought others would think of me with oily hair.

  • March 28 2023

The last day I put shampoo in my hair. I had finally had enough of putting one foot in and one foot out. I was going all in. I was going to push through for at least a whole year.

Today is 65 days without shampoo. (the day I am writing this)

    I am loving it.

So here are my thoughts so far…

1.) I had no idea that the journey I was about to embark on would lead to me taking more care of my hair than I have ever done prior. I used to just put shampoo on my hair, “clean” it, and call it a day.

2.) My hair has never felt this healthy and full in my life! All the spots on my head that felt like were balding/ thinning are now filling in again. My hair color is getting back to my natural strawberry blonde coloration. My hair feels clean and strong.

3.) It’s no joke when I say it’s been a full process. I now have to spend time taking care of my hair. It takes time for your hair’s natural oils to get into a good cycle. IT TAKES TIME! You have to think, you have spent most likely your whole life putting shampoo and telling your natural oils they are not allowed to exist on your head.

THE PROCESS: Now every night /every other night, I massage my scalp to release the natural oils in my hair that have built up from the day. Every night I “brush” my hair just using my hands to detangle from the day, sometimes I use my hair brush. Every time I go to take a shower to wash my hair, 3-5 times a week, I brush my hair out with my hair brush and massage it again releasing those oils. To wash my hair I simply put it in the water and scrub my scalp with my hands for about 5 minutes, really getting in there. Then I use my towel to dry as much as I can and let the sun/ air dry my hair for me. After all this I also clean my hair brush 2-3 times a month, this looks like taking out all the hair on it and letting it soak in boiling water for a few minutes and making sure every part of it is clean.

Closing thoughts: As of right now, being 65 days in, I am loving the no shampoo journey. I’m not saying that I will never use it again but for now I will go without.
